Double comparatives are adjectives with more than one comparative marker. For example, the comparative word more and the comparative suffix -er are both applied to the adjective loud in the phrase more louder in the sentence above. Like comparatives, superlatives (most, -est) may also be doubled.

Double comparatives may also involve two instances of the suffix -er, as in the word louderer, though the double usage of this suffix might be a distinct phenomenon from the usage of more and -er together. In particular, there is typically no difference in meaning between louder and more louder, while it may be that there is a difference in meaning between louder and louderer.


The presence of more than one comparative or superlative marker is widespread across varieties of English around the world, and it is attested in other languages as well (Bauer 2007; Wlodarczyk 2007; Szmrecsanyi and Kortmann 2009; Wolfram and Schilling 2016:81, 383). According to Wlodarczyk (2007), it is associated with Appalachian English and African American Vernacular English (see also Montgomery 2008:267), though it may be found in other North American dialects as well, such as Newfoundland English (Clarke 2004:314).


Historically speaking, this construction is attested as far back as Old English (González-Días 2007). As noted by Corver (2005), there are a number of examples from Shakespeare of double comparatives and superlatives, two of which are shown below:


Nevins (2012:92) cites Radford (1977) for the claim that double comparatives do not license two comparisons. For example, the following sentence contains a double comparative and feature two comparisons (comparison with Bill and comparison with you), and they are unacceptable to many native speakers because of this:


Corver (2005) also discusses cases of double comparatives in Dutch which involve two instances of the comparative affix. This would be analogous to something like biggerer in English. It is at present not clear what the grammatical status of this kind of doubling is in English. Certainly, one finds cases of this, as in the following examples from the web:


Other instances suggest that -er-er is meaningful doubling. There is, for example, a YouTube video showing two children wrestling, which has the title "guy who's taller than me vs. guy who's evan [sic] tallerer than me". Many instances of this seem to come with even along with a previous instance of a non-doubled comparative, as with the examples in (9):

Comparatives and superlatives are special types of adjectives used when comparing two or more things. The trickiest thing when using comparatives and superlatives is making sure we are writing them the correct way, but with a little practice, comparatives and superlatives can quickly be mastered.


Identify the comparative and superlative adjectives in the sentences below. There may be more than one in a sentence. Make sure you specify which are comparative and which are superlative.


Comparative and Superlative Adjectives are words we often see and use in our writing. Make sure you are structuring your comparative and superlative adjectives appropriately for the number of syllables in the adjective.


In basic word order, emphasis is placed on the effect expressed in the main clause followed by the cause (varying item) in the subordinate clause. The main clause is worded as a comparative clause (-er, more, less) followed by as and a clause with another comparative phrase (-er, more, less) or word. This clause order often sounds awkward with the more, the more wording.


For emphasis the cause clause is "fronted", placed first. It begins with a comparative phrase such as the better, the more, the higher, etc. It is followed by the effect which also begins with a comparative phrase such as the more, the greater, the better, the lesser, the fewer, the harder. The subject and predicate (verb) can be included to add specific information or omitted to express a general statement.


Students may enroll in a program leading to a double major. A student may complete a double major by completing one type of baccalaureate degree (e.g., a Bachelor of Science) and electing to concurrently pursue two majors of that type of degree. A student must complete a double major simultaneously. In order to complete a double major students must satisfy all requirements for both majors, including general education requirements across schools if applicable. Courses common to both majors may be counted toward the requirements of each major. Courses that are required or are electives in one major may be used to fulfill electives in the other major, however, the double major must contain coursework of a minimum of 150 credit hours. Student completing a double major will receive one diploma with both major fields of study noted on the transcript. To declare a double major, students must be advised by faculty in both academic disciplines and complete the Application for Double Major form (PDF).

We conducted a randomized. double-blind. double-placebo study in two groups of elderly hypertensive patients aged over 60 years to compare nitrendipine to enalapril. given once daily over 4 months, as monotherapy with 20 mg tablets. Clinic blood pressure was measured monthly and 24 h ambulatory monitoring was obtained at day 0 and day 120. fifty-two patients entered the study (22 in the nitrendipine group. 30 in the enalapril group): 4 patients in both groups were dropped from the study because they withdrew their consent to participate. Three patients under nitrendipine and live patients under enalapril were not included in the analysis of data because of insufficient follow-up. The two groups were comparable on final analysis. The clinical blood pressure was similarly reduced in both groups at 24 h postdose (1 72/97 to 157/85 mm Hg on nitrendipine vs. 177/98 to 154/.86 nun Hg on enalapril). Seventy percent of the patients had their blood pressure normalized at the end of the study in the two groups. With ambulatory blood pressure recording, no 24 h blood pressure significant differences were found on day 120 when we calculated the mean of systolic blood pressure (SBP) or diastolic blood pressure (SBP) 137 12/82 9 mm Hg on nitrendipine vs. 136 16/82 + 11 mm Hg on enalapril). or for daytime or nighttime periods. The pulse pressure or the mean of the live highest SBP' values was also similar in nitrendipine and enalapril patients. The slopes of the morning SIM' and DBP increase were not different between the two groups (SBP: 6.5 2.0 mm Hg on nitrendipine vs. 6.0 + 1.9. mm Hg/h on enalapril). Thus. nitrendipine and enalapril had a similar safety and efficacy on the blood pressure profile in elderly hypertensive patients.
