A gadget is downloaded as a "package" of resources and configuration files. The package is distributed as a zip file or as a Windows cabinet (.cab) file. Both methods of distribution require that the file name extension, .zip or .cab, be changed to .gadget. If the file is packaged as a .cab file, you can use a code signing certificate to provide information about the origin of the gadget. The user is then presented with this information before the gadget files are extracted. The signtool.exe application included with Visual Studio 2005 can be used to sign a gadget.
Windows Defender is a free program that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software. When integrated with Internet Explorer, Windows Defender performs file scanning on downloads to help ensure that one does not accidentally download malicious software. Gadget packages are included in the Windows Defender scan.

The gadget security model can be compared with Internet Explorer and associated domain sandboxing security models. However, gadgets have more in common with HTML Applications (HTAs) than they do with HTML content in Internet Explorer. Because gadgets have a similar download and installation process as other executable code, gadgets have been provided with a similar set of capabilities. The MSHTML runtime is configured with the set of permissions given to HTAs or the Local Machine Zone security configuration.
The choice to run a gadget is presented to the user in the same way that the choice to run any application downloaded from the Internet is presented. Information about the author of the gadget is displayed in a dialog box that indicates there is risk associated with this file. After the user accepts the warning, the gadget will run with all of the permissions associated with the user's login account.
In a computing environment controlled by group policy, the use of gadgets can be further limited. The Sidebar supports three gadget folders, %systemdrive%\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Shared Gadgets and %systemdrive%\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets that can only be modified by the Administrator group and the %systemdrive%\Users\%user%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets folder, where gadgets downloaded by the user are installed.
This policy allows administrators to require that all gadgets installed by a user are digitally signed. This policy only affects gadgets that are downloaded and installed by double-clicking on the gadget package. All previously installed gadgets, as well as those installed manually, will still function.
If you move your cursor above a gadget you can drag it around your desktop. It doesn't need to stay on the sidebar. There will also appear some buttons next to the gadget. Click on the X to close a gadget or on the wrench icon to access its options.
Here you can, for example, click on the first checkbox to make the sidebar always visible. This way you have your gadgets always in sight. A disadvantage is though, that the close button of maximized windows isn't on the top-right corner anymore. To fix this you can put the sidebar on the left side.

edit: ah, yeah, reinstalling sidebar fixed it. Now I just need to track down all my gadgets again, sigh. Thanks MS. Eh, nevermind, the 8gadget pack is the easiest way to go, it has all the gadgets I wanted anyway. Unlike the sidebar, gadgets in Windows 7 are actually very useful. Unfortunately many people overlook this feature, instead going or a platform like Google Desktop. Having used both Google Desktop and Windows 7 Gadgets, I have to say that gadgets have some advantages. They feel much smoother than Google Desktop's alternative. The selection is more limited, however, so let's take a look at some great Windows 7 gadgets.
There are three great, related system monitor gadgets available for Windows 7. These gadgets are called CPU Meter, Network Meter, and Drive Meter. CPU meter monitors processor usage by displaying a graphic of processor usage and also status bars for each processor core. This gadget also monitors RAM usage. The network monitor displays IP addresses and keeps track of both uploads and downloads. The drives monitor displays all connected hard drive and their capacity.
The download has been tested by an editor here on a PC and a list of features has been compiled; see below. We've also created some screenshots of 8GadgetPack to illustrate the user interface and show the overall usage and features of this Windows 8 gadget program.
Click the Enable Sidebar option on that window to add a new, blank sidebar to the right of the desktop. Then add some gadgets to the sidebar. Select Add gadget to open the window directly below that includes 49 widgets for you to add to the sidebar. They include clocks, calendars, notes, image slideshows, app launchers and more besides.
Now double-click a gadget on that window to add it to the sidebar. You can probably fit at least five or six gadgets on the sidebar as shown in the snapshot below. To customize a gadget, you can right-click it and select options to open additional settings for it.
My favorite gadget for the 8GadgetPack sidebar is Launch Control. Add program shortcuts to that gadget by dragging them from the desktop onto the Apps section of Launch Control. It also includes utility and system shortcuts such as Recycle Bin, Run and the Shutdown button. This sidebar also includes thumbnail previews of open software windows on the taskbar. Click the Window-Manager button at the top of the bar. That shows you thumbnail previews of the windows as in the shot directly below.
To customize the gadget bar, right-click the sidebar and select Options. Then click the View tab on the window to open the options below. There you can choose a variety of alternative skins for the sidebar by pressing the buttons. Select Color and Theme Color to further customize the colors of the skins. Click Enable transparency to add a transparent effect to the sidebar.
Those are four programs that add a sidebar to Windows 10. The sidebars add plenty of handy gadgets and tools to your desktop. Desktop Sidebar and 8GadgetPack are the best of those as you can add program and system shortcuts to them and they have a wider variety of customization options.
SwiftRun lets you search websites and run applications with a few swift keystrokes, and eliminates laborious navigation. It also does the job of multiple gadgets, so you only have to download one search gadget to cover Wikipedia, IMDb and more.

Sidebar gadgets install locally on a user's machine, although they do not appear in the Start menu. The Windows Sidebar application (sidebar.exe) is responsible for managing, hosting, and selecting Sidebar gadgets. As we'll see later in this article, Sidebar gadgets can run on the desktop, or inside the sidebar area itself. This sidebar can take a dedicated amount of space on the screen, or can hide behind other windows. We create Sidebar gadgets using HTML, script, and the System.Gadget object model.
Windows Vista ships with a number of Sidebar gadgets out of the box, but users can download additional gadgets from the Windows Live gallery. Being close to the machine means a Sidebar gadget has some advantages over their web counterparts. For instance, Sidebar gadgets can access some local resources on the machine.
Windows Live gadgets can customize the look of a Windows Live homepage or Windows Live space. We can also build these gadgets using a combination of HTML and script. Instead of appearing in the Vista sidebar, these gadgets appear inside a web browser when a user is browsing a web page with a gadget installed. These gadgets are also available from the Live gallery for users to click and add. 2ff7e9595c
